Build Log: Mercedes SL600

SRQ Custom Autosound - SL600

The goal of this installation was to vastly improve on the pitiful Bose system without changing the look of the vehicle. The major considerations were that the factory radio was to remain in place, and no holes were drilled in the car.

SL600 Door Speaker Pod SL 600 Passenger Door SL600 Rear Speakers
These plastic pods used to contain a Bose 6" and 4" combo. Now its a set of JL Audio ZR-650csi components. Mercedes adds this foam to the outside of the door skin, and we filled the inside of the door with damping. The 2" Bose speakers in the rear were upgraded with Hertz 70mm drivers with little modification.
SL600 Rear Speakers SL 600 Center Channel SL600 Sub Enclosure Prep
The rear speakers and their mounts are back in position. Another Hertz 70mm driver replaces the 2" Bose as the center channel. The passenger floorboard and possible splash zones are covered in tap and plastic.
SL600 Sub Enclosure Mold SL600 Sub Enclosure
A mold is carefully made of the passenger floor over several hours. The front of the enclosure is made from 2 layers of 3/4" MDF to countersink the JL Audio 10w3v3. The completed enclosure is attached to the car using factory mounting points. A grille is installed over the sub and the carpet folds up to conceal it.
SL600 Factory Amplifier SL600 Metal Amp Rack SL600 Amp Rack
All wiring connections are soldered in at the factory amp located behind the driver's seat. This steel rack was welded up to give a solid mounting location for all the trunk equipment, without making holes in the car or using bulky pieces of wood. The rack is mounted and wiring is complete. There is still a spot for jumper cables and the tire pump as well.
  SL600 Trunk
With the trunk floor in place, everything appears stock, until you get in and turn on the radio.
